A Prayer for My Child’s Mental Health

When your son or daughter is struggling with anxiety, depression or something they can’t put into words, you may feel helpless. Prayer doesn’t replace care, but it is a place to bring your fear and your love. This prayer is for a child of any age.

Lord, my child is hurting in a way I can’t see and can’t fix.

You know what is going on inside them, the thoughts that keep them up at night and the heaviness they carry through the day. Please come close to them. Bring light where it feels dark. Bring rest to a mind that won’t slow down.

Give my child hope. On the days they can’t find a reason to get out of bed, give them one small reason. Remind them they are loved and that they matter, to me and to You.

Lead us to the right help. Give wisdom to their doctors and counselors. Let them find people who understand and who don’t give up on them.

Lord, help me know what to say and when to just sit with them. Keep me from saying the wrong thing out of fear. Give me patience for the slow days and grace when I’m worn out.

Please heal my child’s heart and mind. Hold them when I can’t.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If your child is in crisis

If your child is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). It is free and open 24/7. You can also reach out if you are worried about your child and don’t know what to do next. Asking for help is part of caring for them.

Praying alongside your child

Some children welcome a parent’s prayers and some don’t. If your child is open to it, you can pray with them briefly and gently. If not, pray for them on your own and let your care show in small ways, like a text or a meal left at the door.
