A Prayer for My Children

Most parents pray for their children in bits and pieces: in the car line, at the kitchen sink, lying awake at night. This prayer gathers those bits into one. Say it as it is, or put your children’s names in it.

Lord, thank You for my children. You know each of them better than I do, the things they tell me and the things they keep to themselves.

Watch over them today. Go with them to school, to work, to the places I can’t follow. Keep them safe on the road and steady in their hearts. When they feel scared or left out, let them sense that You are near.

Give them good friends, people who bring out the best in them. Help them choose what is right, even when it costs them something. Let them grow up kind.

Teach them who You are. I can tell them about You, but only You can make that faith their own. Plant it deep so it holds when life gets hard.

And help me, Father. Give me patience for the long days and wisdom for the hard talks. Forgive me where I’ve gotten it wrong. Let my home be a place where my children know they are loved, by me and by You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verses to pray with

Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.

Psalm 127:3

Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their prosperity.

Isaiah 54:13

‘May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace.’

Numbers 6:24–26

A short prayer for my children

Lord, I place my children in Your hands today. Keep them safe wherever they go. Give them friends who are good for them and the courage to do what is right. Let them know they are loved, by me and by You. Draw their hearts close to You, now and all their lives. Amen.

Praying for each child by name

If you have more than one child, try praying for each one by name, one at a time. Think about what that child is facing this week, maybe a test on Friday or a falling-out with a friend. God already knows, but naming it helps you pray for what is really going on.
