A Prayer for My Adult Children

When children grow up, our part changes. We don’t make their decisions anymore, and often we hear about them later. Prayer is something we can still do every day. This one is for a grown son or daughter, near or far.

Lord, my children are grown. They have their own homes and their own decisions, some I agree with and some I don’t. I still love them as much as when they were small.

Be with them today in all the parts of their lives I can’t see. Bless their work and give them rest when they need it. If they are married, protect their marriages. If they have children, give them patience and joy as parents.

Where they are struggling, help them. Where they are making choices that worry me, speak to them in ways I can’t. Bring good people into their lives.

Keep their faith alive. If it has grown quiet, wake it up again. Remind them of what they learned as children and let it become their own.

Help me know my place. Teach me when to speak and when to keep quiet. Help me offer love without strings and advice only when it is wanted. Let our family stay close, even across the miles.

I trust my children to You, Father. You have always loved them more than I have.

Amen.

Verses to pray with

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

3 John 1:4

being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5–6

A short prayer for my adult children

Lord, my children are grown, but they are still my children. Watch over them today. Bless their work and their homes. Draw them close to You. Help me love them well, speak when I should and stay quiet when I should. I leave them in Your hands. Amen.

Letting go and still praying

Praying for adult children often means praying about things we can’t control. You can pray about a job search or a faith that has gone quiet without saying a word to them about it. This kind of prayer can bring some peace to your own heart too.
