A Prayer for Panic Attacks

In a panic attack, long prayers are impossible. This one is short on purpose. Say it slowly, one line per breath.

Lord, I’m here, and You are here.

Slow my heart.

Slow my breathing.

You are my refuge, my safe place.

I am not alone. I am in Your hands.

This will pass. You will stay.

Hold me until it does.

Amen.

Verses to pray with

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.

Psalm 46:1

For I am the LORD your God, who takes hold of your right hand and tells you: Do not fear, I will help you.

Isaiah 41:13

From the ends of the earth I call out to You whenever my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 61:2

Breathe with it

Breathe in for four counts, hold for a moment, and breathe out for six. On each breath out, say one line of the prayer. When you reach the end, start again from the top.

After it passes

Panic attacks are frightening, but they do pass. If they happen often, a doctor can help you understand why and what helps. You can pray and get help at the same time.
