A Prayer for Anxiety

Anxiety can make your chest tight and your thoughts run in circles. This prayer gives the worry to God, one piece at a time. Read it slowly, out loud if you can.

Lord, my mind won’t slow down, and I’m asking You to calm it.

You know what I’m afraid of, even the things I can’t put into words. I give them to You now, one by one. Take the weight I’ve been carrying alone.

When my thoughts race ahead to everything that could go wrong, bring me back to this moment. You are here, right now, and I am not alone.

Slow my breathing. Loosen the tightness in my chest. Let Your peace settle over me, the kind that doesn’t depend on everything being fixed.

Help me do the next small thing in front of me, and leave tomorrow with You.

I trust You, Father, even when my feelings don’t. Hold me steady.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verses to pray with

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

John 14:27

A one-line prayer for anxious moments

Lord, I give this worry to You. Be with me right now. Amen.

Short enough to say in a waiting room, in traffic or in the middle of the night, as many times as you need.

When anxiety keeps coming back

Praying once doesn’t always make the feeling go away, and that doesn’t mean the prayer failed. Many people pray the same few words every time the worry returns. If anxiety is wearing you down day after day, talking to a doctor or counselor is a wise step too.
