A Prayer for Depression

Depression can make even small things feel impossible, prayer included. This prayer doesn’t ask you to feel better first. It asks God to stay with you in it.

Lord, everything feels heavy today, and I don’t have much left to give.

I can’t feel You right now, but I’m choosing to talk to You anyway. Please hear me.

You know how dark it is in my mind. You know the thoughts that tell me nothing will change. Speak louder than them. Remind me that I am still loved and still Yours.

Give me strength for the next small thing: to get up, to eat, to answer one message, to step outside.

Put the right people around me, and give me the courage to tell them how I really am.

Bring the light back slowly, Father. I’m holding on to You, even if only by a thread.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Verses to pray with

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

A short prayer when words are hard

Lord, I’m still here. Please stay with me. Amen.

That is a whole prayer. God hears the ones with few words.

You don’t have to get through this alone

Depression is an illness, not a lack of faith. Prayer and getting help belong together: a doctor, a counselor, a pastor or a friend you trust. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US or Canada, or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 in Australia, right now.
